Better not pout

I was actually going to call this post 'Mistletoe and Whine' but felt a bit mean. We went to Hebden Bridge at the weekend to buy some presents and generally soak up the festive cheer.

Sadly, Joe wasn't feeling in the least bit cheery. His back teeth are coming through, he's full of ANOTHER cold and he complained the whole time. Which took the shine off things somewhat.

Having said that, he liked the toy shop (below).

He also cheered up when we sat in the square eating chips (fried in dripping - we were in Yorkshire) and the pigeons landed and assaulted each other in the hope of getting a morsel.

It was a gloomy day but the sun came out now and then. Fortunately we wrapped up warm. And the chips helped enormously.

We browsed a lot and bought a few goodies. I visited my favourite flower shop and marvelled at the displays, and Jay bought Joe his first 'proper' teddy bear (the traditional type) as one of his presents.

We had a wander around the Heart Gallery (above) but unfortunately Joe really ramped it up and we scuttled back out, mortified at our having shattered the peace and quiet in there. Silly I know. It was just one of those days where he was only happy if we were on the move. The joys of parenthood!

There's a little shop I love and the lady there sells all kinds of vintage things, including lots of functional items and kitchenalia - definitely a weakness of mine. The photo at the top of this post, of the narcissus paperwhites, was outside there too.

We bought some lotions and potions from here. It's so very Christmassy in there - all sparkle and perfume and luxury. Actually, Joe paused for breath and allowed himself to enjoy it. Although I noticed Julie Andrew was singing 'Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down' in the background.

So maybe the soundtrack to Mary Poppins could be one of his stocking fillers...

After a long drive home over the moors, we put the little one to bed for a nap and ticked a few more gifts off the list.

And later on we ordered a curry. The health kick can begin in January February.

  1. Been following your blog for a while. It's lovely!

Sorry to hear that your little boy was not feeling up to shopping and browsing.

I did like the sound of those chips!

    1. Thank you - and nice to hear from you :)

He's a lot brighter today. It's very unusual for him to complain like that so we know there's something wrong when he does... As for the chips, let's just say the pigeons didn't get much of a look in. Something about hot chips on a cold day - can never resist them!

  2. Your day in Hebden Bridge sounded so nice, even with a teething baby. My son was horrendous every time a tooth appeared so I do sympathise, and I don't miss those teething days one bit. That photo of the paperwhites is lovely - I want some in my house now! x

    1. Hi! We did like Hebden, even with the wailing. It was nice to get away for a few hours. Teething is horrible - we haven't had any problems until lately but the back teeth are supposed to be worse apparently.
My paperwhites are just starting to flower. I love having bulbs in the house, even when they're just green pointy things!

  3. My favourite festive cushion came from the vintagey shop you mention. We always used to have a pre-Christmas wander over to Hebden Bridge when we lived in East Lancs but we generally go to Kirkby Lonsdale now.

    1. Hello! I've heard about Kirkby Lonsdale but have never been. Maybe we should give it a try (likewise Wigton - supposed to be a bit like Hay on Wye with all the second-hand bookshops).
I quite like Clitheroe too, but it's not quite as arty as Hebden...

    2. I prefer Clitheroe for exactly that reason, it's not as dusty and lentil filled! But there's lots to look at and I tend to find something to bring home from the Platform. Lytham lets itself down by not having a fabric shop.

    3. Not been to Lytham for ages! It's nice to go somewhere by the sea. I used to teach there for a while... the last time I went I also visited St Anne's - that seemed a bit down at heel, sadly...
I love the Platform at Clitheroe too. And Byrne's wine shop. The smell of freshly-ground coffee...

    4. St Anne's is fine, we're just not fancy!

  4. Hebden looks like a gorgeously lovely place to visit. Shame about the grumpy boy - I well know the 'having-to-leave-immediately-with-screaming-child-in-tow' - it feels so embarrassing! But as one kindly old lady said to me the other day 'it bothers you a lot more than it bothers anyone else, don't worry!' Hope Joe's teeth have settled down now. Those molars are so rubbish. Love your last line about the curry too ;) xx

    1. It had to be done! I've given up on the whole 'I'll be good right up until Christmas' thing - never gonna happen!
I thought we'd got off the teething situation lightly as his front teeth didn't bother him at all. It's been over a week and he's really not himself. Hopefully the end is in sight (preferably before Christmas) x
