Home again

We're home! Have been since Thursday evening actually. Firstly, thank you to everyone who wished up a good trip. I always like to reply to comments but on this occasion we were a bit offline (although I did manage to publish my pre-written Colour Collaborative post during a flying visit to Peebles library on Thursday morning).

We took many, many pictures. I've made collages and I think they tell the story of our little escape far better than an exhaustive account would. And who wants to read about all the details of someone else's holiday anyway?

So... in a nutshell: Peebles, Edinburgh (and the zoo), mountain walks and a drive back home via Northumberland. Oh, and the weather was lovely for the most part.

Scotland... a few little observations I made in my notebook:

Pheasants, deer, sheep, lambs... Silver-grey, verdigris, acid green... Moss, lichen... Snow-dusted mountaintops... Blue skies, frosty nights... Pine forests, rivers, streams... Solid little stone dwellings with smoking chimneys... Open roads, misty hilltops... Red phone boxes... Coltsfoot... Sash windows and gold-lettered house names... Dry stone walls... Fresh, cold air.

Love that place!

    1. Hi Jennifer. Joe was absolutely fine - he slept well in a strange bed and loved our hikes up in the mountains... that was our favourite part of the trip too!

  11. What a great way to give an account of your holiday - photos say just as much as words don't they. Glad you had a lovely time - we will be going up to Scotland at Easter and I can't wait. My hubbies Aunty used to live next to Edinburgh Zoo and he and his cousins used to hop over the wall back in the early 60's! (security was very sparse then!!). It was one of the first places he took me when we started dating, however we did go in through the front entrance and pay!

    1. Well it's £16 per person these days, so leaping over the wall would be a good thing!
I hope you enjoy your trip. And yes, luckily not being at school any more means we don't have to document each aspect of our stay in words. Photos are much more fun :)

  12. Hello Sarah,

We stumbled across your blog through the labyrinth that is the Blogosphere and have been captivated by your delightful picture collages. They capture the essence of what was clearly a most refreshing and stimulating time away but also the warmth and happiness of returning home.

We love Edinburgh and even toyed with living there at one point in our lives. And, as for Northumberland, well it is truly a magical county as far as we are concerned. Fabulous landscape and almost no people. Wonderful!

    1. Hello - thank you for stopping by. I did indeed pay you a virtual visit. You're certainly well-seasoned travellers, and cultured too! Nice to meet you.
Northumberland is beautiful. It was the first time I'd ever seen bona fide roadsigns warning us to slow down for red squirrels! We too love the empty expanses, and the little market towns are lovely too.
      Sarah.

  13. looks like a truly wonderful trip. We keep meaning to go on another day trip to Edinburgh on the train and go to the zoo.
I see you had a trip to Barter Books too, can't be beaten, I dried out by the fire there yesterday after getting totally drenched in the rain.......

    1. It's a great place, isn't it? I just wish we lived a bit closer! The weather was a bit grim in Northumberland when we went but was good for the most part above the border... shame we couldn't get across to Holy Island though. Fog, wind, rain :(

    1. Thank you! There were so many photos to look through, the collages seemed the best thing to do - especially for the blog! I do enjoy playing around with them too :)
We did have a lovely time - particularly the walks up in the mountains. I could do that every day!

    1. Oh, I've always wanted to go back to Ireland again. I went there years ago and the countryside looked lovely but sadly we stayed in Dublin and only drove through Wicklow and didn't get to stop and explore.
Scotland is a magical place. Maybe next time we'll get a bit further - the Isle of Skye is supposed to be beautiful x
