Lilacs

We had a bit of a get-together on Sunday and wheeled the barbecue out. Ribs, home-made coleslaw, chicken on skewers, sausages, burgers, beer, Eton mess... yum.

Anyway, my mum's neighbour had kindly let her cut me a big bunch of lilacs. They look lovely. Another shrub to add to the 'one day' list.

They started to droop a little bit yesterday, but as I've mentioned before (somewhere), I used to work as a florist. Top tip: if flowers look a bit wilty, take an inch or so from the bottom of the stem. Cut it diagonally. Then plunge into boiling water and leave for half an hour or so.

It doesn't work with all flowers but it's good for things like roses and chrysanthemums. The boiling water clears any blockages in the stem so the flower can take water up again.

My lilacs are happy once more.

And yes - I have done that Thing That Everyone's Doing These Days: arranged my books in order of colour. It looks quite nice.

  1. I love Lilacs, they're one of my absolute favourite smells, we have one in our garden and I keep shoving my nose in it! Books do look nice grouped by colour, I loved your old Penguins you had grouped by colour in a past post. I'm most ashamed to say that my books are in absolutely no order whatsoever, they're not even in the same room as each other, it's a proper nightmare trying to find anything. I must get it sorted one of these days :)

    1. A lilac in the garden would be lovely. My brother has one but you can't reach it - way too overgrown.

Don't feel bad about your books! One day when it's cold out you can have a good sort out. The Penguins are stashed in the shed in cardboard boxes and it's a bit damp in there so I daren't look - I've got a bad feeling they'll be covered in fungus or something :(

  2. Think I remember reading a post on that... and I've had the same problem! Style over practicality I suppose.

I've been warned off the CD collection.

    1. Thank you. And yes, it does... don't think they'll last much longer though - sadly.
