Weekend scrapbook

A trip to Grandad's house to deliver his birthday cards and presents.

Musical candles, bubble blowing and admiring the flowers.

My mum loved her garden. We went on her birthday in October to plant lots of bulbs. It seemed a fitting tribute.

They're now coming up everywhere. It's a good place to feel close to her. Some things never change: a sunny, breezy day meant a line full of washing and a little explore to see what was appearing in the hidden corners.

Joe was fascinated by the frogspawn. He liked the feel of it on his fingers. The frogs hid but were croaking loudly, probably warning us off...

After bacon butties and birthday cake, a walk along the canal.

Spring has sprung. I noticed it in the waterside gardens and the hedgerows. Soon there will be ducklings.

Other little things of note:

I read my first ever bit of Russian literature yesterday: a short story (Vladimir Nobokov's Christmas). It was beautiful.

The meds are working but steroids mess with your sleep. A few drops of lavender oil on the pillow don't seem to be having a massive effect but the bedroom smells wonderful, like an old country house.

I've drawn a line under the whole winter stodge thing. Saturday was all about gluttony. Sunday was all about regret. We now have lots of wholesome and healthy fruit and vegetables and lean meat and fish and pulses for this week's meals.

There was a final hurrah by way of fish and chips though.

Hope you had a lovely weekend.

P.S. The honey and caramel birthday cake was good - my first foray into caramel-making went well. But it was buttercream overload; a bit too sweet and rich for me (never thought I'd ever find myself saying that). Still, the menfolk enjoyed it...

  1. That sounds like a good weekend, especially the cake and fish and chips. I've been wondering where my frogspawn is. I usually have some by now. Has yours been there long? I cleaned out the pond a while back, maybe I scared the frogs away. I love the image of Joe feeling it. Boys! Have a good week Sarah. CJ xx

    1. Thanks CJ. The frogspawn has only been there a week or so, according to my stepdad. But there are lots of tadpoles swimming about already sporting little legs, so it seems spring has definitely sprung...

  3. How nice for Joe to be allowed to touch frog spawn. I haven't spotted any yet (but haven't looked all that hard). Did you read Nabokov in Russian? I don't think I have read much Russian Literature at all. I hope your week is a good as the weekend! I am glad you are feeling better and hope that you manage to sleep better soon, too. Cx

    1. Thankyou. Oh, and I read the Russian in English if you know what I mean... My language skills are pretty rudimentary. Basic French and German only!

  4. Hey Sarah,
Those flowers in the first montage are gorgeous. I feel as if I have over indulged this weekend too. I think I celebrated getting to my interim target weight a little too enthusiastically. But hey you've got to live a little, right?
    Have a great week,
    Leanne xx

  7. Hello, I'm Carol D. from Southern California in the U.S. and I love your blog. But I have one question, what does the name of your blog Mitenska, mean? Thank you

    1. Hi, nice to meet you! Southern California sounds wonderful right now as I'm steeling myself to get up on a cold morning...
Mitenska apparently translates as 'mittens' in Polish. I have Polish heritage and the name was unusual (naming your blog is a very tricky thing!)
      Sarah :)

  8. Oh my, your cake looks delicious! I have no doubt the menfolk around here would enjoy a slice too. Spring has sprung here too! We found lots of frogspawn on Sunday while out walking. The wee ones loved it. Hope you have a lovely week Sarah, Bee xx

  10. Sorry to hear you're not sleeping well. I buy lavender oil as a bedtime rub from the 'sleep' range here :: http://www.thisworks.com/ ....to be honest - I think it does really work - and the bedroom smells lush too.

We've got loads of frogs in our pond, the kids (and cats) are mesmerised, but all the frog spawn is sat at the bottom. We can't wait for tadpoles. x

  11. Good to hear the birthday celebrations went well and that your cake was scoffed. Haven't spotted any frogspawn here yet but the local frogs are active and we've rescued/moved along half a dozen from a rather busy cycle path.
