Postcards from the weekend

There'll be no Midweek Miscellany next week because I'll be posting my Precious Things on Thursday, and as a rule I don't generally post two days in a row.

I do, however, enjoy putting a pick 'n' mix post together. And although I don't generally blog at the weekend sometimes it's nice to have a change. That, and it's been a good few days with plenty of photo-taking and little pleasures to be had.

Yesterday we did the usual fruit and vegetable shop at the market then Jay took the little one off in the car. I got to stay and linger all alone, free to roam and drift around the shops. No pushchair to lumber up and down steps and through doorways, no complaining or little hands reaching out to grab breakables. It was bliss.

To be able to slow down and actually look at things, to wander at will with nobody making demands. I think that you appreciate these little pockets of freedom all the more when they're a bit of a rarity.

I didn't buy much: a bar of rose and geranium glycerine soap from here (I do love geranium), and a vintage bottle with a stopper (a charity shop find) which was a snip and merely in need of a good wash. It will no doubt appear here once I can get some decent lighting. I think I'll be making a list of all the things I need to photograph indoors, then pouncing as soon as the sun comes out...

There was definitely a festive feel to the proceedings. Maybe it was the cold, the slight gloom or perhaps it was the pleasure of going in and out of those little independent shops looking for small treasures. So different to the shove-it-down-your-throat approach of the supermarkets and shopping centres. It may be early but when there's just a little hint of Christmas - well, that's fine with me.

I walked home up the long, long hill and looked out across the fields and woods. There's a double-fronted stone farmhouse which you view from the back and from an elevated position I always admire the garden: a washing line and bench and flowers, then a fence with a five-barred gate leading to the greenhouse and raised beds: the kitchen garden. It's my dream place.

Today we went out walking. Cold, damp but still wonderful. Fresh air and little details to notice. Joe watched the steam train and jumped in puddles, and befriended a little black Shetland pony. We see so many friendly equines around here, I really should buy a bag of pony treats next time I'm in town.

We came home to a lovely roast dinner (Joe still won't entertain cauliflower or broccoli) and now the light's fading and weekend's almost at an end. Why does it always go by so fast?

I hope you've had a good weekend. Enjoy these last few precious hours!

  1. I remember well that feeling of freedom when there's no buggy and no small people touching everything. Lovely photos, I adore the winter colours. Still plenty of cauliflower-refusing in this house too. I live in hope. Enjoy the rest of your Sunday. CJ xx

    1. Thanks CJ - and cauliflower's about as unpopular as broccoli, tomatoes and all the rest of it. I'll have to get sneaky and blend his veggies into sauces I suppose!

  2. Your photographs are beautiful! The light has been so poor here lately, but yours have a sharpness and clarity. Fabulous. I have my precious post all lined up.

    1. Looking forward to seeing it! As for the photography, there's a lot of editing to improve the exposure. I end up playing for way too long though but maybe that's my hobby? I enjoy it, it's creative so yes: I've decided photo-taking and editing is my Thing :)

    1. You too! I actually tried looking around shops with Joe this morning. It was not a fun experience. He's currently testing both his boundaries and my patience. I love the wellies too, I should wear them more often :) x

    1. Thank you! I can't help myself - as soon as we're outdoors I'm at it. Nothing goes unnoticed (or un-photographed) so it's really wonderful to know other people get some pleasure from them too!

  5. Weekends always pass so quickly! Thanks for sharing your lovely photos. I'm sure you really enjoyed your bit of free shopping time. It's lovely to get some peaceful Christmas shopping time. Even just looking and thinking about what you might get.

    1. This is true! I think I have so many ideas I have to exercise a bit if restraint and think, 'Quality over quantity'... x

    1. Thank you! The wellies were actually a bit long in the leg and sat unworn for ages. Then I bit the bullet, took the scissors to them and hey presto! Wearable. They were quite pricey (but bought with Christmas money). And it was a case of either not wearing them at all or modifying them - I'm glad I sliced the tops off :)

  8. You are so right about the pockets of freedom and how precious they are. My two are both at school but I still enjoy being able to just go out, alone, with just my handbag, no buggy or changing bag. In fact, walking up the (many) steps to the post office today, I remembered what a faff it was going the long way round up the ramp with the pushchair only a few years ago. Having a pushchair certainly gives an insight into what it must be like to access many places in a wheelchair. I know supermarkets are far from ideal in many ways but at least they have relatively easy wheelchair/pushchair access! Lovely photos from your weekend. x

    1. Thanks Gillian!
It's true - I think as well as the physical aspect of heaving a buggy in and out of the car and around the shops, you have to be constantly 'switched on' - where to park, how long you've got until the complaining starts, when you'll need to get home for the lunch/nap/changing merry-go-round.
So nice to just exhale and experience the lightness of wandering at will with no plan or 'have to's... x

  9. Gorgeous autumnal...ness. It was so chilly this morning, we had ice on the car...for the first time since moving 'up North' - it was rather lovely to behold.
