The week that was

Some images from the past week. First up: hydrangea stems on the table. They're one of my favourite things to photograph. And they look just as good - if not better - once they've dried out.

Chicken on the barbecue. It was good. We should have done more. A lot more.

Season of mists, mellow fruitfulness... and fungi. Apparently it isn't officially autumn until September 22nd. Well it feels like it's here already. And we don't hold off celebrating Christmas until December 25th, do we? Not that I advocate the whole festive silly season which begins in October either...

We still have a week or two until these are ready for collecting. But I've found some trees with branches which almost touch the ground and they're full of fat conkers. Joe will be pleased. He seems more interested in the casings than the conkers themselves, calling them 'seashells' and holding them to his ear.

I've started planting out the window boxes with autumn/winter flowers. The plan was to go for heathers and silvery foliage but I changed my mind when I saw these little pansies. Hopefully the snails will leave them alone.

There will be more planting but I'm glad I made a start. I limited myself to the one window box because the place I bought these plants from was so expensive. Maybe we'll invest in nicer containers too instead of the plastic imitation terracotta ones, which I don't like very much at all.

Tea and a Viennese slice. Joe drove me to it earlier in the week.

A... cowl? Snood? Neck warmer? Anyway, it's knitted from some wool I've used for many items and then gone on to unravel. This one's a keeper I think.

The buttons are vintage ones, bought many moons ago, and are made of glass.

I hate having my photograph taken but in the interests of showing my new garment being worn, I decided to go for it. I generally assume 'selfies' are for the vain but it would appear they also require photography skills I don't possess.

Take one: Oh dear.

Take two: A slight issue with the focus.

Take I-have-no-idea-as-I-lost-count: Resorting to just using the camera as I know how. Hopefully you can see the scarf/cowl/snood thing.

You can also see that my roots need some attention. It's all glamour around here.

Have a great weekend!

  1. I love those photos of you. Did you know that you have perfect eyebrows? Really. I enjoy reading about conkers because we don't have them where I live. I love that Joe holds them up to his ear, that's really sweet. I hope you have a great weekend.

  3. I adore your window box, and it reminds me that I need to get my bum in gear and sort mine. I read an article on the perfect selfie in the latest tesco freebie mag. I'd love to be ble to take a good selfie. It's not vanity. It's having one nice photo of me!.
    Have a lovely weekend.

    1. I think I associate selfies with celebrities, particularly those appalling Kardashians (watching E! News is one of my guilty viewing pleasures). If you manage to get the formula right please let me know!
Admittedly it seems to be a bit easier than getting a decent passport photo. Those little booths with their horrible lighting... My driving licence looks like it belongs to an anaemic, sleep-deprived criminal.
You have a great weekend too :) x

    1. Rimmel, I think. Nails are always short and dark for me. Even in summer...
And I'm already on cowl number two! I just like the repetitive, relaxing nature of knitting without having to decipher a pattern x

  6. You have a great weekend too!

I know what you mean about Autumn, it's here too already, lurking in the background.

Now it's 8.23am and all I hanker for brekkie is bbq chicken and cream slices... mind you, that's not a bad thing ;)

    1. Now that would be a good breakfast! Sort of a take on a continental style one (cooked meats, little cakes etc). I could eat like that every day of the week x

  8. Love the cowl/scarf/snood thing, it's gorgeous. Your photos made me laugh, I tried some selfies in a lift with the biggest boy the other day and they were hopeless. You've captured the turning season beautifully. Some of the people round here are more than a little obsessed with conkers, it's a competition to see who can get the most, the best, the biggest. I hope you guys have a good weekend. CJ xx

    1. You too! And I suspect Joe will get into conker competitiveness over the coming years. I remember us being like that at school, with people trying out weird and wonderful techniques to toughen them up ready for tournaments x

  9. I love hydrangeas dried more than fresh! I still have one head in a bowl from last year. Your neck warmer looks great, and so do you. Conkers are hard to find in Glasgow. Too many takers I think.
I just remembered something funny when I read your post: I was going to grow my hair dye out to remind myself of my own hair colour and told my hairdresser so the other day. He said that I could probably get away with it because my grey coverage was only about 20%..... 20%??? I went straight to the shops and got some DIY dye. Still no glamour here, I don't do glamour well unfortunately.
    Have a great weekend! Cx

    1. Hydrangeas have a wonderful papery quality to them, don't they? The colours are beautiful too. They always remind me of sepia photographs somehow...
As for hair dye: I always colour my own. It's a horrible faff, all that applying and waiting and rinsing. Not to mention the fact that it seems to get everywhere. But last time I checked, my local salon would have charged me £70 for a cut and colour (and that was with the cheapest 'junior stylist'). I simply can't afford that each month.
So DIY it is. I just need to go and buy some!
Hope you have a great weekend too x

  10. Love the cowl and the selfies. I've only ever taken one, of me with the mister in Amsterdam. Our girlie said we looked like a pair of terrorists.

  12. Autumn is most definitely here with us. We've been conker collecting twice already. I love, love, love your new cowl. It's beautiful. Great selfies too. I can't seem to take a decent one. Just wondering about your hydrangeas. What's the best way to dry them? Bee xx

    1. Hi Bee. I find that hydrangeas are quite resilient so just putting them in a vase minus water usually works. You could probably hang them upside down somewhere too for that Country Living look ;)
