Valentine

It's Valentines Day... How do you choose to celebrate it? I'm more or less of the 'It's a cynical marketing thing dreamed up by the greetings card companies to bridge the gap between Christmas and Mothering Sunday' school, but still...

You can go trashy (red underwear, cuddly toys) or classy (restaurant, Paris weekend), I suppose. We're going trashy. We're staying in and making hotdogs with fried onions, American mustard and ketchup, and French fries. Accompanied by cold beer. And once Joe goes to bed we'll be tucking into Mississippi mud pie and watching a few episodes of The Middle.

Valentines Day, our way.

Earlier this week we did the shop window display. Styling and displaying charity shop windows is both challenging and fun, as you really don't know what you'll find out in the back room. We unearthed cut glass perfume bottles, an old encyclopaedia (left open at 'passion'), books on Audrey Hepburn, sparkly costume jewellery...

I also made a garland to hang up.

Jay and I have an agreement: no presents, just cards and a cosy home-cooked meal. Although I did find some lovely tulips in the kitchen this morning.

I made his card on Wednesday, using an alphabet stamp set. A bit wonky but most definitely home made.

I do love these stamps. Sadly they don't have numbers in this set but you can get those separately. I may well do that.

Anyway, have a lovely evening and weekend whatever your plans may be.

  1. What a lovely card. Enjoy your evening. We'll be doing much the same with a nice home cooked meal and some TV :)

    1. It's the best way! Obviously, a weekend somewhere glamorous would be lovely but who wants to even step outside at the moment?
Have a nice evening and a relaxing weekend x

  2. 'Cosy night in' translates as 'We can't be bothered going out'... I'm wearing woolly socks over tights, am wrapped in a shawl and have no intention of glamming it up!
We're having 'proper' sausages for the hotdogs though, the tinned/jarred ones don't appeal as much somehow.
And the stamp kit was from Hobbycraft. They didn't have much choice by way of fonts but never mind. I suspect every card for every future occasion will look rather similar. Let's call it my signature style! The stamps were good fun to play with, I recommend them!

  3. I have a similar set of alphabet stamps too Sarah, they are good fun to use . Andy and II used to always say that valentines day was a hallmark card conspiracy! Naughty to be so cynical! We don't really do it either, hunker die neither food, wine and a movie is more than enough for me x enjoy your evening x

    1. We did enjoy our evening - but Mississippi mud pie... never again! I'm the world's biggest fan of desserts but it was too rich even for me. Tarte au citron, that would have been better.
Hope you had a nice Valentine's too x

  4. We're of the same thinking - cards but no presents. A glass or two of vino this eve, and trying to stay awake to watch something good on telly I expect.
Love the stamped card - I've become a bit alphabet stamp obsessed this week after finding stamp sets in 'the works' in town for £1.49 in many, many different fonts. I may have bought a few...
Dressing the charity shop window sounds brilliant fun - a window dresser was one of my passing fancies for a career when I was about 16! Enjoy the hot dogs and beer! x

    1. We did - but why oh why did I eat so much?! I have no appetite at all today. Miso soup all the way...
Thanks for the tip re. the alphabet stamps. I'll be paying The Works a visit soon (although I did go back to Hobbycraft this morning and bought the matching number set)...
Window dressing would be a great job, wouldn't it? If I'd been more clued-up as a youngster I'd have known that my dream job would be as an interiors stylist. I ended up teaching, being a florist and then an arts administrator. One day...
Hope you had a nice evening x

  5. That sounds like a brilliant way to spend the day.

I understand your cynicism about the Valentine's Day hype but the day has been associated with celebrations of romantic love for 100s of years so I'm happy to play along. Especially if it means I get flowers ;)

    1. Oh yes, flowers are always welcome! And it makes sense about the whole Valentine tradition - I've seen lots of Victorian cards with cherubs and posies and the like.
Hope you got a lovely bunch of pretty flowers x

    1. I hope you did, too!
I'm sure you'll find a stamp kit online. In fact you'll probably be spoilt for choice... I have my eye on another one already, a less grungy font :)

  7. Great card - simple is always best. We just swap a card, sometimes flowers or chocolates - this year I made chocolate hearts as Valentine's Day has fallen on my day off and my better half was away on business. Had great fun. We are having a cosy evening by the fire now sampling the chocolates and watching re-runs of William and Mary.
PS I wouldn't say no to the weekend in Paris though!!
PPS Love your blog by the way - not sure how I discovered you - probably having a bit of a roam around blogland. Viv

    1. Hello! Nice to meet you. I always find new blogs too - I must manage my time a bit better so I can keep up with them all!
Your chocolate hearts sound nice. Handmade means so much more... I hope you enjoyed them and had a relaxing evening. Even if we'd had a reservation somewhere posh it would have taken a lot to get me out of the house last night into all that wind and rain!
      Sarah.
