Blog breaks

You may or may not have noticed that I blog daily. Today... well, yes I'm blogging but there isn't much happening. It's snowy outside (I have no intention of venturing out - that wind is pretty punishing) and we're staying home as we have a house viewing in a couple of hours. Yes, I've been busy tidying and hiding things. And said wind has blown the For Sale sign down so I hope our viewers find us.

Today it's just about keeping warm and making soup from what's left in the cupboards (told you we were staying home). 'Making do' appeals to my Housewife, 49 sensibilities as you know.

Jay has suggested on more than one occasion that I consider a day or two off from blogging each week. At first I thought, 'But what if people stop visiting? They might get bored and stop writing their lovely comments, or take them elsewhere.' This is down to my being a rookie, I'm sure. Beginner's anxiety or something like that.

I don't always write about what's happened in 'real time' on any given day. So on an uneventful one like today I might choose a topic (my head's always full to brimming with them, as is my blog notebook) and plunder my photo archives (taking decent quality images indoors during the winter months can be a challenge).

But then there's posting for posting's sake. A duty-bound post which says nothing in particular but lets you hit 'publish' at the end of it and you can tick another thing off your to-do list for the day. I don't want to do that. I love writing my posts and want it to stay that way. I want to be happy with what I share with you.

So... I won't be publishing a new post seven days a week. I'll take a day or two off each week for a bit of inspiration-finding and idea-forming. I'm sure, judging from the nice people who do stop by and comment, that I didn't need to explain this little development at all. But there you go.

The top photo is from my archives - I don't often use black and white for Mitenska. Interestingly, it's also one I used in my profile pictures when online dating. Jay liked it...

Sarah :)

  1. I must admit I also have that beginner's anxiety that I don't do enough posts in a week, a lot of time and effort goes into your posts though and you're right to take days off. Don't worry yourself, people will still visit your lovely blog :)

    1. Thank you for that comment! It's nice to know people enjoy reading Mitenska and I think that instead of banging out posts each day just for the sake of it I can concentrate on writing meaningful ones (ideally with good photos!)
      I hope you're enjoying blogging too. I'm a regular visitor :)

    2. That's what I thought, I originally did a schedule with what posts I'd do each day but it felt too laboured and like I'd just be posting for the sake of it which wouldn't be fun. I am greatly enjoying blogging though, I really do love reading other peoples blogs too, it's like snooping in on someone's diary almost isn't it?! You feel like you know bloggers without ever having met them.

    3. That's true. Although I try and think about what to share and what not to - once things are out there they may well come back to haunt you!

  2. Thanks for that - it's useful to hear what others are doing. I think maybe I was setting the bar a bit high for myself but it's all a case of trial and error I suppose.

I may use more black and white images. They tend to work best for me when I'm photographing architecture or more dramatic scenery. Perhaps freeing up a bit of time will allow me to play with the camera again...

  3. I think daily posting can be really difficult to sustain ... your blog is lovely and I'm hoping you're here for the long haul so better to give yourself the occasional break than risk burnout.

A lot of regular readers won't visit every day anyway, particularly if they are bloggers themselves ... there are only so many hours in a week and we all need time to read, write and do the things we blog about. I try to spend a couple of long sessions a week catching up with my favorite blogs. And to post 10-12 times a month, although I'd like to push that to 12-14, but that would be my max. I'm sure as you go along you'll find the right balance for you :)

    1. Hi Annie -
Thanks for your comments. I really enjoy hearing from other bloggers. I suppose it's just a case of finding my way and that will come in time.

And it's true - I find myself hurriedly glancing over other blogs I like rather than reading them properly. It would be good to devote some time to enjoying what other people have written (although I found the other night that taking the laptop to bed is lethal - late nights and babies are not a good combination!)
